Onsi Sawiris School of Business Launches an ESG Barometer for Corporate Egypt
The Onsi Sawiris School of Business has launched its environmental, social and governance (ESG) Barometer initiative to promote sustainable business practices in Egypt. The initiative takes an innovative approach to studying ESG readiness and represents a significant step toward aligning the corporate landscape with global sustainability standards. As part of the ESG Barometer, the aim is to provide an overview of how well Egyptian companies respond to sustainability needs and priorities in various sectors. The initiative seeks to create a robust data set by conducting anonymous surveys of leading companies. The research will provide insight into Egypt's current ESG practices and future development.
“Our vision is to raise awareness, facilitate strategic improvements and promote sustainable and responsible business practices in alignment with global standards and local priorities," stated Sherif Kamel, dean of the Onsi Sawiris School of Business. “We believe that by providing these timely insights, we can empower stakeholders at all levels to confidently guide their strategies and respond quickly to emerging trends and opportunities.”
The ESG Barometer goes beyond simply collecting data. By providing robust data tracking tools and clear analysis tailored to users' needs, the initiative aims to empower a wide range of stakeholders. This includes business leaders, investors, policymakers and researchers. The insights from the barometer will enable informed decision-making and strategic planning.
“We’re not just producing a report,” explained Kamel. “We are developing a tool that can bring about real change in the way companies in Egypt deal with sustainability and corporate responsibility.”
As Egypt plays an increasingly important role in sustainability, the ESG Barometer is becoming highly relevant. By providing a clear picture of where Egyptian companies stand in terms of ESG practices, the barometer will highlight areas for improvement. It will also showcase progress and success stories.
The first ESG Barometer edition results are expected to be released at the AUC Business Forum 2025 in February 2025. Companies that are interested in participating or stakeholders who want more information are encouraged to contact Professor of Practice and CIB Endowed Chair Noah Farhadi at the Heikal Department of Management or Assistant Professor Dina Elbassiouny at the Youssef Nabih Department of Accounting.
‘With this initiative, we are going to deepen our understanding of and showcase the progressive sustainability mindset of executives in the region’, said Farhadi. Elbassiouny added, ‘Sustainability is one of the top priorities of progressive organizations in Egypt. The ESG Barometer will help us predict sustainable development in the future.’
With this initiative, the school reaffirms its commitment to promoting sustainable development and responsible business practices in Egypt. It also sets high standards for corporate assessment and transparency.
