Welcoming Future Leaders: "WIND"
Welcoming Future Leaders: "WIND" - A Welcome Induction for Newly Declared Business Students of Fall 2024
AUC School of Business recently welcomed the latest group of newly declared business students to their 11th “WIND” event to celebrate academic progress and prepare students for their exciting journey with the School.
"The welcome induction day is crucial for students as it sets the tone for their academic journey, introduces them to key resources, fosters networking opportunities with faculty and peers, and provides insights into future opportunities through our development program. The School of Business holds this event every semester to ensure students feel welcomed, informed, and connected to the school community, enhancing their overall educational experience" stated Eman Mourad, senior manager, the Office of Student Services and Development (OSSD).
The event began with introductory remarks by Maha Mourad, associate dean for undergraduate studies and administration, who congratulated students on their progression and spoke about the School's history, values, and opportunities that students should leverage to craft a truly unique CV. She was followed by Ahmed Tolba, professor and chair, Heikal Department of Management, who encouraged students to utilize academic advisors for personal growth beyond academics.
Dina Abdel-Fattah, assistant professor and chair, Mohamed Shafik Gabr Department of Economics, reiterated the importance of mentorship and how it should be fully utilized to ensure students choose their specialization wisely. Mohamed Basuony, professor and chair, Youssef Nabih Department of Accounting, highlighted the value of networking at events and how to leverage the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) accreditations for those interested in a lucrative accounting career.
“All gatherings increase the interactions and the communication between the students while providing them with useful information. WIND offers insight into the three departments – Management, Accounting, and Economics – plus courses, clubs, and events available throughout the year”. Basuony also detailed the accounting accreditations, “Bachelor of Accounting students are exempt from nine ACCA exams, allowing them to earn two certificates in just one year, which will help them engage with markets and employers”.
Two key messages were echoed by all four speakers: check your emails regularly and explore the CO-OP program. Staying on top of one’s inbox is crucial for receiving important messages, seizing opportunities, and maintaining strong relationships. Meanwhile, the CO-OP program provides invaluable real-world on-the-job training, allowing students to gain practical experience and apply their academic knowledge in a professional setting. This hands-on experience not only enhances learning, but also prepares students for future career opportunities, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.
Following the speakers, an interactive networking session took place among students, faculty, staff, and partners, introducing various student clubs and offering detailed explanations of different concentrations. Student organizations presented themselves with the aim of empowering business students through academic knowledge, practical experience, and leisure activities.
Xena Hassan, a sophomore student declared in Bachelor of Business Administration in management of information and communication technology (MICT) and academics manager with the student-led Business Association, provided her intake on the WIND event.
“WIND helped make me feel less intimidated and more oriented as a newly declared student. I’ve learned more about my courses, met other students in the major and more motivated to balance my studies with associations like the Business Association. I’m really looking forward to a great start this year”.
From the energetic networking to the valuable advice from the speakers, the latest WIND event has set newly declared business students on the right track. The Fall 2024 semester promises to be another impactful one with a wide range of activities and programs available at the School of Business.
